Drop-off And Pick-up Procedures

During the times of “drop off” in the mornings and “pick-up” in the afternoons, we need to be patient and tolerant in all areas in order to keep our children safe. We’re all excited, we’re all in a hurry, and there are a lot of us! This adds up to a potentially dangerous situation for our children every day. We know that our drop-off and pick-up spaces are not optimal with the limited access to John Baker and parking area, but they are the procedures that have been approved by the district and city safety divisions.

John Baker has traffic procedures in place that greatly reduce the risks to our children. The only problems we have had are when adults choose not to follow them. The basic rules are outlined below.

  • Use designated areas for pick-up and drop-off and parking.
  • All children should be waiting in the designated area (fence by playground) by the Duty Teacher. Those students that are waiting in other areas will be directed to wait in designated area.
  • When a car reaches the designated pick-up zone, the children will be permitted to enter from the curbside only.
  • Drivers should remain in the car behind the steering wheel and wait for the staff on duty to help the students to the car. Please follow duty’s signal to pull forward as needed.
  • Follow the car in front of you to exit the parking lot and obey all turning lane restrictions. • No cell phone use. (This is a state law.)
  • If you need to assist your child in any way, park in a space in a parking lot, walk your child to or from your car and be sure to cross to and from the parking lot using the designated crosswalks.

Above all, please practice PATIENCE and RESPECT. It will prevent children from getting hurt. Please respect these procedures and be a good example to the children in your car. REMEMBER that the crossing guard and duty teachers are all working to keep your kids safe.
